A Place for Polar Bears

Polar Bears ~ Angel Wings
As the biggest bear on earth today, the polar bear has earned a place in the hearts of many, including my own. They can get up to 5 feet at the shoulders and have mouths big enough to fit your head in (though I don't recommend you try it). Their immense size makes them suitable for life on the ice.

In college, one of my professors illustrated this principle using french fries and tater tots. Right in class he fried some french fries at tater tots. He gave each of us a serving of both and told us to eat them. Being wise college students, we at the fries first because of course they cool down the quickest. He explained this is so, because french fries have a greater surface area to volume ratio while tater tots have a smaller surface area to volume ratio. In other words fries are long and skinny while tater tots are fat and round. Polar bears are like tater tots in that they have a smaller surface area to volume ratio which allows them to retain body heat longer.

Indeed, polar bears are built for the ice, but as we know their arctic homeland is disappearing. Polar bears are loosing their place in the world. This catastrophe will invariably affect many other species across the globe in ways we cannot yet know. Polar bears are the first warning to a much larger problem. What are you going to do today to help fix it?

Polar Bears ~ Angel Wings is a part of my WCN 2018 Fall collection. While polar bears are not a partner species of WCN, Polar Bears International (PBI) presented at my very first WCN expo. I haven't forgotten this bear and I hope you won't either because they need your help. If you need ideas on how to help the polar bears please visit PBI's website.
